Antal Dorati
The highly dynamic and versatile conductor Antal Dorati was born in Budapest in 1908. One of the most recorded of any conductor of the 20th century (he made over 600) before his death in Berne in November 1988. His early fame was as a ballet conductor. Partly Jewish, he luckily fled France and found his home in America before the start of WW II. In the 1940's his first appointment was with the Dallas Symphony, he gained perhaps his greatest fame when he assumed directorship of in Minneapolis in 1949 when Mitropoulos left for New York. It was during this period he made his legendary Mercury recordings. From 1964-7 he led the BBC Symphony. In the 1970's, he assumed directorship of the Washington National Symphony and from 1977-81 Dorati became director of the Detroit Symphony. Arguably the greatest conductor of ballet from Tchaikovsky and Delibes to Copland. His strong rhythmic sense gave him the edge over just about anyone in Bartok, Kodaly, Copland or Stravinsky. In this series, his "live" recordings of Berlioz, Strauss, Bartok and Dvorak are about the most astonishing and exciting concert performances you may ever hear. In tempo and conducting style, his performances were opposite the heavy Germanic style of a Klemperer and closer to the texture and dynamics of a Toscanini .
