Born in Vienna, Krips studied
with Weingartner. He was a fine violinist. From 1933-38 he conducted
the Vienna State Opera because his grandparentS were Jewish and
he himself a Catholic he was forced to leave Austria in 1938.
After the war he returned to Austria and was conductor of the
Vienna Symphony. Krips was principal conductor of the London
Symphony from 1950-54. Krips was director of the Buffalo Philharmonic
from 1954 to 1963. In the US he also guest conducted in Chicago,
New York and at the Met. From 1963-70 he was music director of
the San Francisco Orchestra. Krips is quoted:
"Only after 25 years can a conductor teach an orchestra.
For the first 25 years a conductor learns from an orchestra."
