(December 27, 1907- July 27, 1978) ... a Dutch conductor and composer. Van Otterloo was born in Winterswijk. He studied composition at the Amsterdam Conservatoire, and while playing as a cellist in Utrecht , he won a composition prize from the Concertgebouw Orchestra for a work the premiere of which constituted Van Otterloo's conducting debut with that orchestra in 1932. He held posts with the Utrecht Orchestra before being appointed chief conductor of the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague (1949-1973). In 1971 he was appointed to the conductorship of the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra. A large part of his legacy is a number of fine recordings released on the Epic label in the US (Philips in Europe) during the 1950's. He guest conducted in Japan (broadcasts over NHK) and with American Symphony Orchestra in NY. |
